For men. . . Enter the arena for a more passionate and healthier lifestyle. Read  The Gladiator Diet.

"A very good friend of mine had been reading information on your site and she had me read the information.  We quickly decided to place an order and split the 12 tubes of estrogel.  I took a half of a half a dose as soon as the package arrived. Within 30 minutes I could tell a 100% improvement! It is a God send, Larrian.  I cried with relief -- and also with anger and frustration thinking about the years of pain and suffering I endured without the extra estrogen my body needed. Woman give so much of themselves to their family, friends and society -- but who is there to help them through their trials.  Certainly, not the majority of the medical community. Again, a thousand thanks for taking the time and making the effort to educate all of us about this important and life changing issue. Sincere regards.--Sue Beaulieu.

Introduction
Menopause, A Personal Journey

Every woman must face the end of menstruation and fertility. But with it comes something NO WOMAN need resign herself to... gaining weight. In my professional experience I had counseled women on hormone replacement therapy but put little emphasis on lifestyle changes. Yet I could see that well disciplined women going through menopause were gaining weight despite eating a "healthy diet". It was enough to make anyone cranky, let alone depressed!

All this had special relevance when it was my figure that began to change as I entered my forties. At first it was gradual, only a few pounds in six months, but within four years I had managed to pack an additional twenty-five pounds onto my petite five foot two inch frame. I became an expert at "dress camouflage," emphasizing my newly developed bust line over my ever expanding waistline, while relegating my "older" clothes to the back of the closet. Large, oversize T-shirts substituted as my new uniform while I filled drawers with belts that were no longer "fashionable" for me. What had once been a dancer's body had now morphed into a spider body - thin arms and legs attached to a large, round torso.

My day of reckoning came when I went for a physical examination and peeked at my report which frankly stated: "Forty-five year old elderly multiparous white female mild to moderately obese...". I wanted to scream!!! Me...OBESE!!! I knew what that meant. After all, I had written it about my very own patients. Obesity was next to slovenliness, carelessness...a glutton. How dare this man write that about me. Didn't he understand it was natural to gain weight when you go through menopause?

The truth hit me hard. I had become obese for my size. As a physician, I was fully aware of the health risks that came with being simply fat. But as someone, who enjoyed food and the entire experience of preparing it, I looked forward to dinner, my only real meal of the day. As a surgeon, I skipped breakfast and avoided drinking fluids when I operated so I wouldn't be interrupted by nature's call and there was never enough time for lunch, as patients were waiting in the office. I rationalized every behavior deviation I knew contributed to weight gain, including blaming my mother for making me eat everything on my plate because there were "poor starving children in China." And then I realized if I didn't start putting my own weight loss on the top of my "TO DO" list, I was setting myself up for heart disease, diabetes, hypertension and years of disability.

This book is about my own personal journey through the process called menopause and how I lost the dangerous abdominal weight ALL women are prone to gain during this stage of life. In these chapters, I will reveal why women gain and lose weight differently than men, supported by the latest scientific research, and what you can do to avoid it. I will show you why women have been inadvertently fed the wrong information about diet during menopause and I will present to you explanations for the very symptoms and changes that are natural and what you can do about them. I will also share with you my perspective on current medical literature so that you can make your own intelligent choices about diet, exercise and hormone replacement therapy.

Got your knickers in a twist over hormones? I'll share with you my perspective on the current medical controversy in a new, expanded chapter, so that you can make your own intelligent choices about diet, exercise and hormone replacement therapy. Concerned you may suffer from thyroid problems? Learn why so many women are underdiagnosed thanks to outdated laboratory standards, and what you need to know about the dangers of "natural" soy products. For all you "kitchen phobics" out there, I've included new, simple menu plans to help jump start your weight loss program. You'll find a shopping list, fast food choices and, for those with thyroid problems, a list of foods to avoid if you want to keep your thyroid fueling your weight loss.

Over 60 million women are expected to be postmenopausal by the year 2000 and the latest longevity stats claim that anyone who reaches the age of 50 by the millennium has a one in two chance of living to 100. With these encouraging odds, no woman approaching menopause can afford to open herself up to the potentially dangerous health risks of "letting 'er spread." With nearly 50% of American women age 45 and above classified as overweight, obesity has become a major health problem in the United States. It's time for a change.
